United Way of Marquette County Completes
United Way of America Membership Requirements

Barbara Meyer, Director of Operations, announced that the United Way of Marquette County has successfully completed all of the United Way of America membership requirements satisfactorily and on time. The requirements include: MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS CERTIFICATION, MEMBERSHIP INVESTMENT, and the DATABASE 2 SURVEY OF TOTAL RESOURCES GENERATED (a survey that captures the full extent of a community’s resource development efforts during the year).
“ It is important for us to maintain a high standard of accountability and this is part of the process to document that our operations are transparent and meet or exceed United Way membership criteria requirements,” stated DO Meyer. “The membership standards must be certified annually in order for us to remain a member of the United Way system.”

The board of United Way of Marquette reviewed and approved the Membership Requirements Certification on June 16, 2005. The certification mandates completion of 13 requirements for United Way of America membership along with verification of the status of 44 indicators that demonstrate a United Way embodies the intent of the membership requirements.

“It is critically important that all United Ways meet the highest standards and verify on paper that they have conformed to the stringent requirements of membership in the United Way system,” stated Brian Gallagher, President and CEO, United Way of America. “We applaud and congratulate United Way of Marquette County for demonstrating their commitment to the mission and ideals of United Way by completing the recertification process.”

The United Way of Marquette County is part of a system of over 1,300 United Ways. Each local United Way must complete United Way of America’s requirements annually in order to retain its United Way of America membership.

NFL Player pitches in to aid local United Way
By MATT HANSON, Journal Sports Writer

MARQUETTE - New York Giants and former University of Michigan place-kicker Jay Feely didn't hesitate when he saw an opportunity to contribute.

"I feel like I've taken so much from the Upper Peninsula. This is a chance for me to give something back."
Feely participated in the Marquette General Hospital/United Way golf outing Thursday at the Marquette Golf and Country Club. The NFL has partnered with the United Way since 1973 and the kicker recently signed on as an NFL-United Way spokesman.

Feely became aware of the outing after seeing a flyer while golfing the new Greywalls course at MGC. He then called local officials to learn how he could help.

"The NFL, more than any other professional sports organization, encourages and contracts with their players to perform a certain amount of community service appearances," Feely said.

The kicker's appearance at MGC was more out of commitment and interest rather than obligation.

"I got involved with muscular dystrophy when I was in high school by going to their camps," Feely said. "I had a life-changing experience the first week I went. It gave me a different perspective on life.

"You see these kids living with a degenerative disease and yet, they're happy and not complaining. It puts things into perspective.

"I feel the same way about the United Way," Feely continued, "When you get involved with some of the projects they do, the people that they're helping ... my wife and I both try to get involved any way we can."

For the record, the scratch-golfing, cannon-off-the-tees Feely said he is impressed with Greywalls.

"That's as pretty a course as anywhere I've played," he said. "I've played some PGA championship courses and this is an absolutely gorgeous course."

Feely's wife, the former Rebecca Dawson of L'Anse, is more than likely at the top of his list of good things from the U.P. that have come his way.

The pair met when Feely attended U-M after being a prep All-American kicker at Tampa's Jesuit High School in Florida. According to Feely, the pair spend one month each summer and winter in the area.

"I just love it up here. (My wife and I) are both outdoors people. We love to be outside, try to catch some lake trout, go biking, you name it."

Feely played for the Maize and Blue from 1995-98, ranking second in Michigan history in career field goal percentage. He's eighth in career field goals with 20.

"I loved it," Feely said of his time in Ann Arbor. "People asked me why I went to Michigan from Florida, and it was two reasons: I wanted to win a national championship, which we did in '97, and I loved the tradition."

"When you get there, and learn even more, it gets engrained into your heart. That's what's special about Michigan."

Like his move from Florida, Feely's scenery will change again this year when he reports to the Giants' training camp after four seasons with the Atlanta Falcons.

In 64 games with Atlanta, he kicked 98 field goals and 142 extra points on 144 attempts.

"It's been interesting going from rural Georgia to New York City. God just kind of opened that door and closed the others," Feely said.

"I think we'll be a good team. Eli Manning will be a very good quarterback, but his biggest thing is not to try and live up to his brother (Peyton)."

Feely says one of the things he'll miss most about Atlanta is attending bible study classes with comedian Jeff Foxworthy, Turner Network NBA analyst Ernie Johnson and Atlanta Braves Cy Young award winner John Smoltz.
